Imagine attending a concert in 19th-century Moscow and hearing Mozart played in an ever-so-quintessentially Russian way. In PBO’s very first foray into Russian Romanticism, Richard Egarr allows you to do just that! The second half of the program, featuring Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s 4th Symphony, plummets into angry misery and acts as the perfect foil to Mozart’s bouncing symphony in the first half. Sandwiched between the two symphonies are Tchaikovsky’s virtuosic Rococo Variations performed brilliantly by cellist Nicolas Altstaedt. Spend some time in Old Russia and hear both composers anew: Tchaikovsky with old instruments, and Mozart in a Russian guise!
