Educators will discover instruments, musical traditions, food and culture of this vital region of Southeast Asia. Several of the guest artists performing in Mekong: LIFE will also participate.

Vanessa Vân-Ánh Võ is an award-winning performer of the 16-string đàn tranh (zither), a multi-instrumentalist, and Emmy Award-winning composer. Since emigrating from Vietnam to the Bay Area in 2001, Vân-Ánh has collaborated with musicians across genres, bringing Vietnamese traditional music to a wider audience. She has presented her music at Carnegie Hall, Houston Grand Opera, and the London Olympic Games 2012 Music Festival, and has collaborated with Kronos Quartet, Yo-Yo Ma, and many others.

Vân-Ánh has created several multimedia works developed through a community workshop process, including part 1 of her Mekong trilogy, “Mekong: SOUL” commissioned by the Kennedy Center in 2021.

She has received awards and support from the Creative Work Fund, Alliance for California Traditional Arts, New Music USA, Chamber Music America, and the California Arts Council. Under President Obama, Vân-Ánh was the first Vietnamese artist to perform at the White House.
