Each week, Stanford Under the Stars: Movie Nights at Frost brings brings a selection of movies featuring actors who attended Stanford or various Stanford and Northern California filming locations. Emmy and Golden Globe-winning actor Sterling K. Brown arrived at Stanford to study economics, but after starring as Joe Turner in a performance of the play Joe Turner’s Come and Gone during his freshman year, Brown switched to a drama major. After Stanford, he received his MFA from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and landed his breakout role in the award-winning TV series This Is Us. Brown became the first black man to win a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Drama Television Series and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series. Film appearances include Marshall, Black Panther, Frozen 2, and Waves.

Set against the vibrant landscape of South Florida, and featuring an astonishing ensemble of award-winning actors and breakouts alike, Waves traces the epic emotional journey of a suburban African-American family––led by a well-intentional but domineering father––as they navigate love, forgiveness and coming together in the aftermath of a loss. From acclaimed director Trey Edward Shults, Waves is a heartrending story about the universal capacity for compassion and growth even in the darkest of times.
