The Global Guitar

Led by Carlos Caminos | K-12 Teacher Workshop
Mon, Feb 8, 2027 from 4:30 to 6:30 PM
The Studio

The guitar is perhaps the most international of instruments, having a prominent place in musical genres on every continent. In this workshop, we’ll survey the guitar’s history and techniques, and see what the instrument’s travels can tell us about how cultures meet and evolve in communication with each other. Workshop leader Carlos Caminos will share his own musical journey and discoveries about the continued exchange between Spain and Latin America embodied in the guitar’s role in these cultures. The workshop is recommended for both music and generalist teachers, and bringing your guitar is optional.

Carlos Caminos is a guitarist and composer with over two decades of performance across various genres. As a teaching artist, he integrates myth and narrative to explore the integration of Latin American and Spanish cultures in culturally rich music programs for K-12 audiences through partnerships with Young Audiences of Northern California and Youth in Arts.

Starting his Flamenco guitar studies in Spain and the U.S.A. and developing a decade-long music career in South America, Carlos has dedicated his career to seamlessly blending traditional and contemporary musical styles of Flamenco and Latin American Music in unique and compelling ways, making a significant impact in the world of Flamenco, Latin Jazz, Tango, Venezuelan music, and beyond. Most recently, Carlos co-created and performed in Sones de Las Dos Orillas, a dance/music project celebrating the ongoing musical exchange between Spain and the Americas. He has performed at prestigious venues including Blue Note Napa, Yoshi's in Oakland, the Healdsburg Jazz Festival, and the Teresa Carreño Theater in Venezuela with the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra. He was nominated for a Latin Grammy in 2022 for his work with Los Tangueros del Oeste.

Presented in partnership with the Young Audiences of Northern California.
