David Fung, piano

South Korean cellist Jaemin Han was awarded the grand prix of the George Enescu Competition in 2021, becoming the youngest prizewinner in its history, and won further prizes at the Geneva and Isang Yun competitions. He has since recorded several singles for Deutsche Grammophon, and recorded with the Korean Symphony Orchestra for Decca. America 250: Darius Milhaud

Darius Milhaud first encountered jazz while visiting Harlem clubs in 1923, and began to incorporate its rhythms and harmonies into orchestral works such as La création du monde (the first major classical composition based on jazz idioms, predating Rhapsody in Blue). In 1940, he fled the Nazi occupation of France and immigrated to the United States, where he settled at Mills College in Oakland. There he taught a distinguished and stylistically adventurous group of American musicians, including Dave Brubeck and Steve Reich, helping to shape the evolution of American jazz and experimental music.
