Lavinia Meijer is a renowned Dutch harpist celebrated for her versatility and innovative approach to the instrument. Lavinia’s music goes beyond classical harp and ventures into electronic, jazz, and avant-rock. Her discography is just as varied, covering everything from classical composers like George Frideric Handel, J.S. Bach, and Domenico Scarlatti to modern works by Paul Patterson and Garrett Byrnes. She is the only classical artist to have hit the top 10 in the Dutch rock album charts with three consecutive albums.
Lavinia began playing the harp at 9 years old. She studied at the conservatories of Utrecht and Amsterdam. At age 14, Lavinia Meijer began performing with symphony orchestras, such as Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Amsterdam Sinfonietta, and Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, working with such leading conductors as Charles Floyd, Frans Brüggen, Hannu Lintu, and Marco Boni. Her festival appearances include the Grachtenfestival Amsterdam and the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival. Throughout her career, Meijer has performed in prestigious venues worldwide, including Carnegie Hall in New York City, where she made her solo debut in 2007. In 2009, Lavinia won the prestigious Dutch Music Prize, one of the highest honors for a classical musician in the Netherlands.
Listening to Lavinian’s album, ‘The Glass Effect: The Music of Philip Glass & Others,’ is like entering a mysterious soundscape where contemporary classical music weaves through intricate layers. With a delicate touch and profound introspection, she leads you on a journey of emotion and elegance, her harp casting a spell of enchantment. Each note shimmers with grace and depth, painting a world beyond sight.
On March 15 in the Bing Studio, Lavinia will perform pieces written for her by Philip Glass, as well as work by Olafur Arnalds, Nils Frahm, Douglas J Cuomo, and her own compositions, Atmospheric Rivers and Open Window.
I want the listener to feel alive, and that the music triggers more awareness of everything around them and the beauty that exists in the world. I want them to feel inspired.
