Reflections: Timo Andres and Conor Hanick
Wed, Jan 29, 2025 at 7:30 PMOn January 29, pianists Timo Andres and Conor Hanick will take the Bing Concert Hall stage to present an evening of contemporary works transcribed for two pianos. The program features pieces from Sufjan Stevens’ Reflections album alongside Meredith Monk’s “Ellis Island,” a gem of minimalist elegance; the Bay Area’s own John Adams’ “Hallelujah Junction”; and Béla Bartok’s Dance Suite.
Timo Andres and Conor Hanick worked with singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Sufjan Stevens to record his Reflections album. Asthmatic Kitty Records, who released the record in May of 2023, stated "Andres and Hanick bring percussive flair and a light touch to the fast-paced and varied score, digging into grumbling glissando, free-falling filigrees and dread-pan bombast with a joyful ease."
[Reflections] doesn't follow a genealogy of aesthetic. It can be a cornucopia of styles.
This event will mark Timo Andres’ Bing Concert Hall debut. Timo is a composer and pianist based in Brooklyn, NY, but was born in Palo Alto. His recent highlights have included a solo recital debut for Carnegie Hall and the world premiere of a piano concerto for Aaron Diehl at the Los Angeles Philharmonic, led by John Adams. Timo’s notable works include “Everything Happens So Much” for the Boston Symphony; “Strong Language” for the Takács Quartet, commissioned by Carnegie Hall and the Shriver Hall Concert Series; “Steady Hand,” a two-piano concerto commissioned by the Britten Sinfonia; and “The Blind Banister”, a concerto for Jonathan Biss, which was a 2016 Pulitzer Prize Finalist.
Conor Hanick is regarded as one of his generation’s most inquisitive interpreters of music new and old whose “technical refinement, color, crispness and wondrous variety of articulation benefit works by any master” (New York Times). A fierce advocate for the music of today, he has premiered over 200 pieces and has collaborated with composers ranging from Kaija Saariaho to Nico Muhly, to Caroline Shaw. Hanick is the director of Solo Piano at the Music Academy of the West and serves on the faculty of The Juilliard School, Mannes College, and the CUNY Graduate Center.
The experience promises to be quite a full package: a minimalist format with maximalist results, great artistry, and a curated program of pieces in deep dialogue with each other in ways that push them outside of their original cultural contexts.
Patrons who purchase two or more tickets to the featured artist’s Stanford Live performance will be entered in a raffle to win an autographed copy of the Reflections album. Raffle winners will be announced at the performance.
